David Hambridge is an Emmy® nominated cinematographer & award-winning filmmaker based in the American South. He began his debut feature-length documentary, KIFARU, in May 2015 following a successful crowdfunding effort. Each trip to Kenya while filming David noticed an incredibly intimate bond between these young rhino caretakers & their beloved rhino, Sudan. As years passed, the concern of Sudan’s became increasingly evident on these men’s faces. Bearing witness to the highs and lows, the KIFARU team was exclusively trusted to document some of the most sensitive & historical moments that surround the extinction of the northern white rhinos.
Five years have passed as David has filmed alongside Ol Pejeta’s rhino caretakers during moments of profound love and loss. By taking an unorthodox approach to the storytelling of KIFARU, David focused on the evolution of these young men’s relationships, livelihoods, and families - all of which are attached to an animal teetering on the edge of extinction. Fundamentally, David believes losing an animal to extinction should not only be experienced by the world, but “it should be felt” too. With KIFARU, David’s goal is to share that feeling of extinction with a worldwide audience for the first time, and hopefully the last.
